Mr. Shanks received the Masters in Solid State Physics from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He has served as Program Director at the Ames Laboratory; Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institut Fur Festkorperforschung; Visiting Lecturer in the People's Republic of China; and Research Coordinator at Iowa State University. He played an active role in establishing the Microelectronics Research Center and initiated its program in amorphous semiconductors. With several patents and more than 100 publications, he received the 1981 Department of Energy Materials Science Award for his work on the local bonding and structure of amorphous silicon. He is currently involved in research on film deposition techniques as well as work on surfaces and interfaces of amorphous and microcrystalline semiconductors.
