Strategic Plan
1.0 Vision
To become a national critical infrastructure for next-generation research and education in micro-nanoelectronics, photonics, magnetics, and sensors, providing solutions for societal advancement and economic wellbeing. The MRC researchers collaborate on research and technology transfer with a variety of stakeholders and partners from academia, industry, foundations, and national agencies.
2.0 Mission
- To develop and implement innovative research and education programs in microelectronics, photonics, magnetics, and nanomaterials and devices related to grand challenges in energy, information, manufacturing, food security, conservation, and health.
- To develop and sustain research partnerships with leaders in academia, industry, and national agencies, and nurture interdisciplinary research and educational environment to capitalize on emerging research opportunities in micro-nanotechnology.
- To facilitate the commercialization of new technologies through the promotion of entrepreneurial opportunities and technology transfer.
3.0. Plans
Conduct collaborative research that can address grand challenges through innovations in:
- Next-generation micro-nanoelectronics, semiconductors, and photonics.
- Sensors to increase resilience and sustainability of food, energy, water, and health systems.
- Nanomaterials, low-dimensional materials, and nanomanufacturing for energy conversion and storage, electronics, magnetics, and photonics.
Develop innovative micro-nano technologies for high-impact applications that are low-cost and amenable for technology transfer to industry
Discover and translate new science to micro-nano engineering:
- Engage a broader set of stakeholders in the community of research, policy, and practice to identify new opportunities and research topics in micro-nanoscience and engineering.
- Shape the research agenda in collaboration with research agency partners and stakeholders.
- Translate new science and engineering research into technologies and emerging industries.
Educate next-generation workforce in micro-nano technology:
- Engage STEM-focused undergraduate and graduate-level students to build skills needed for the next-generation workforce.
- Provide research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Offer undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, short courses, distance learning programs, and extension studies in energy, semiconductors, sensors, and nanotechnology.
